Allergies
Tuesday, 28 July 2009

It is not uncommon for people to be allergic to bee stings. However, some people do not even realize that they have a problem. They may not know that they are affected in any way when a bee stings them. It is important for a person to know if they are allergic to bee stings and if they are, they have to know what to do to keep them safe if it were to happen.

Most insect sting reactions are not allergic and will only result in local pain, itching, redness and swelling.  Some times a person will have, more swelling than others will and this is going to depend on the person, the type of bee that stung, and the location of the bee sting.  Getting treatment from home or hospital is the only thing that is needed for this type of reaction.  There are a few things that you can do to help with the pain and the swelling.

You should first disinfect the area, keep it clean, and use ice if needed. If the swelling would continue, a person may need to have some steroids to help reduce it.  The site may become infected and antibiotics may have to be issued by a doctor.  There are large local non-allergic reactions that can last for a few days or even more.  This is usually no cause for concern and should be treated as mentioned above or with some other form of treatment.

With some bee stings a person can have an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction to an insect sting will vary from person to person.  The most serious problem could be anaphylaxis and it can be fatal.  There are severe reactions that can occur if the person has hives and intense itching or swelling of the tongue, dizziness and fainting are signs that an allergic reaction is happening.  Usually these types of reactions will happen within minutes of the bee sting but some have been kept off for up to twenty-four hours.  Getting fast treatment is very necessary when dealing with any type of bee allergic reaction.

Children should be watched for a bee sting. If you have a child that is complaining of itching or burning on the body, you should check for a bee sting mark.  There are many ointments on the market today that will be able to counteract the problem of the bee sting. It is very important to make sure that the bee sting is taken care of so that the child is not affected in any way or starts to have an allergic reaction to it.

Bee stings are usually harmless but it is still a good idea to keep an eye on them and make sure that there is no chance of an allergic reaction.

There is usually no cure for allergies.  However there are different types of medicines that you can use to help with the problem.  There are both over the counter and prescription medications that a person can turn to for help.  The different medications will include antihistamines, decongestants, combination medicines, corticosteroids and many others.  Some allergy medications are going to work better than others do for certain people.

There are allergy shots that are going to help increase your ability to tolerate allergens and other problems that are caused by an allergy.  Sometimes people will go and have their allergy shots on a regular basis so that they can keep the allergies under control and not have to worry about them causing problems in their life.  This is the easy to way to make sure that a person is not faced with dealing with their allergies on a day-to-day basis so much.

Using antihistamines is another good option for most that are dealing with allergies.  The can be taken in many different forms.  Some will have them as a pill, liquid, nasal spray, or even eye drops.  There are over the counter antihistamine eye drops that can relieve itchy and red eyes.  The nasal sprays are going to be used to treat symptoms of seasonal and year round allergies.

The antihistamines will be a good counteracted to the allergies that a person may have.  Histamine is released by the immune system and it will attach to receptors in the blood vessels that are causing them to increase. This can make it possible for redness, swelling, itching and even changes in secretions.

Many of the over counter allergy medications will not make you drowsy. There are non-sedating forms that are also available by prescription only.  You can check into the types of allergy medications that are out there and what is going to work best for your situation and what you can afford as well.  It is a good idea to read labels and make sure that you are getting the right type of medication for the problem that you are having the most.  This will get you the most help that you can get for the allergy that you are dealing with.

Decongestants will also relieve allergies and are often times prescribed with antihistamines.  They will come in nasal sprays, eye drops, in liquid or pill form as well.  It will be up to the person on which type they want to try. It is always better to use something that is going to be more convenient for them and easier to use for the lifestyle that they have.  Some people will have certain reactions to different things and it is always good to talk to a doctor first before taking them.

If a person is feeling like they have allergies, they may need to have an allergy test to figure out where the problem is coming from.  Allergy testing will involve having skin or blood tests done to determine what substance or allergen is bringing on the problem.  Skin tests are the most common because they are fast, reliable, and much less expensive than blood tests.  However, any one of them can be used.

A small amount of a suspected allergy-causing item can be placed on or below the skin to see if a reaction starts.  There are three types of skin tests that can be performed to determine the problem.  It will be up to the person and the doctor to decide what is going to be the best route in finding the culprit.

A skin prick test is done by using a drop of solution containing a possible allergen on the skin and a series of scratches or needle pricks that allow the solution to enter the skin.  If the skin develops a red or raised itchy area, it is going to mean that the person is allergic to the allergen.  This is called a positive reaction.

Putting a small amount of allergen solution into the skin does an Intradermal test.  An intradermal allergy test may be done when a substance does not cause a reaction in the skin prick test but is still thought of as an allergen for the patient.  This is going to be the more sensitive test than others and is often found to be positive in people that do not have symptoms to the allergy.

A skin patch test is something that is placed on a pad and is taped to the skin for 24 to 72 hours. This test is used to find a skin allergy called contact dermatitis. In addition, a blood test can be performed on a patient.  Allergy blood tests are going to look for things in the blood that are called antibodies.  Blood tests are not always as sensitive as skin tests but are most often used for people that are not able to have the skin test performed on them.

The most common type of blood test is called radioallergosorbent testing or RAST. It is used to determine the blood level of a type of antibody that the blood may produce in response to a particular allergen.  IGE levels are often higher in those that have allergies or an asthma problem.  RAST may be used for people who cannot have skin tests like those that are taking different medications like antidepressants because this will make the tests less accurate.

There are other lab testing methods like the immunoassay capture test and it may be used by your health care professional to find out more information on what is causing your allergy problems.  Again, it is all up to the patient and the doctor to determine what types of testing are going to be used to find the real reason behind the allergy.

Benadryl is a very commonly used drug that has many perks and downfalls. You will want to talk to your doctor before you consider taking the medication because it might have an interaction with your current medication. Hay fever is not something that you may want to tolerate. You will find that there are a lot of issues that you might have with the drugs and you need to take inconsideration on how the drugs interact with your chemical makeup.

First, you should know that Benadryl is one of the highly recommended medications for hay fever, however, also keep in mind that it has some side effects. Of course, the side effects are a lot different for everyone, but you are more likely to become tired and drowsy when you take the medication. It works quickly, but it could make you fall asleep and without warning. This is not a medication that you will want to take and then go to work. Also, ask your doctor if you need to have your own prescription or if you can just take the over the counter type of Benadryl. For those who could go into shock, you are going to need something stronger than just a hay fever medication. You are going to have to get a prescription that is much stronger.

Also, you will want to think about when you should take the medication. You may find that Benadryl is needed in night hours because you tend to have allergy attacks at night. That works out perfectly when it comes to the side effects of the medication, however, keep in mind that you are going to want to think about combining some medications. You may want to take a medication in the morning so that you can't get the side effects, but then at night take a Benadryl. Ask you doctor to see if that is okay before you take matters into your own hands. As for other medications you may want to think about Sudafed and Clarinex, however, some of the other medications you may need to get prescribed to you.

Don't forget that you are going to want to think about asking your doctor if there are any activities that you will need to change before you take the medications; like you may need to avoid driving or being in the sun, because the medication may have a strange way that it reacts to you.

As you know hay fever is caused by the pollens and spores that are in the air. You will want to learn how to control your hay fever so that you can enjoy the time that you spend outdoors. You will want to consider some of the following medications so that you can take control over your life.

First, you probably have heard of Benadryl. It is very affective when it comes to getting rid of some of the symptoms. You will find that it more help you out more and at a quicker rate when it comes to some of the other drugs. You can get this drug over the counter and it works great when it comes to getting over your hay fever symptoms and stuffy nose.

Clarinex is another drug that you will prescribe to take. There are some forms that you can take over the counter, but you still should ask your doctor if you would be safe doing so. You will find that it will help with runny nose, red and watery eyes, sneezing, coughing and more. You will find that it can help some people with hay fever symptoms, but you will want to think what exactly your needs are, because it works well getting rid of the sneezing, but you may have to wait for the rest of the medication to kick in before you get rid of some of the other symptoms.

Then there is Sudafed. There are not a lot of people who recommend that you take too much of Sudafed. Even though this is an over the counter drug it can be very dangerous when it comes to the other uses of the drug. Many people will purchase it for a different drug use; however, you will find that the symptoms of stuffy nose will go away as well as other nasal passage symptoms.

However, with any drug you will want to check out the side effects. Many of the drugs will make you tired and drowsy and you may not be able to take the medication during the day, however, you may find that there are other medications on the market that work for you. Everyone is different and the way that drugs react with everyone is different too. Don't expect something that works for your sister or brother is going to work for you. You can also try and see, but make sure that your doctor okay's the switch or addition to the line of medications that you are presently taking.

Many people have to watch out for food allergies. However having true food allergies is not that common as many think. They usually only affect about two percent of children in the world but are more common in children that are younger.  Usually most children will grow out of the food allergies that they had when they were born.  This gives hope to any parent that is worried that their child will be faced with a lifetime problem ahead of them.

There are different symptoms of food allergies.  They can include wheezing and hard time breathing.  Sometimes a person will be affected with itchy skin, rashes, hives, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, pain in the stomach and swelling around the mouth and throat.  These symptoms are going to develop usually quickly after a person will digest the food that they are allergic to.  Sometimes it is minutes while other may take hours to go into effect.  There are also many that face nasal symptoms that a person can go through.  These can include runny nose or congestion that some may think are caused by the food allergy but may not be in reality.

It will depend on the person and the severity of the food allergy. Some people may have mild or more severe symptoms to deal with.  It will also depend on the amount of food that the person has ingested.  A severe reaction can include difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth and throat, decreased blood pressure, shock and sometimes death.

More common food allergies are called intolerances to certain types of food.  They can bring on vomiting, diarrhea, spitting up and even rashes of the skin.  There is an example of a reaction that will occur usually in children that have lactose intolerance. This is caused by the deficiency of the enzyme lactase, which will usually break down the sugar lactose.  Children without this type of enzyme or who have a decreased amount of enzyme will develop symptoms after drinking lactose containing food products, like cow's mild.  Sometimes this is a confusing ordeal because the reaction does not involve the immune system and is not a real food allergy problem.

It is important to know if you are allergic to a certain food. If you think that you are you should not continue to eat it. See a doctor and tell him or her about your symptoms and they will usually run tests to make sure of the problem.  You will find that if you do not take the necessary precautions when it comes to food allergies, you can be seriously injured and because more damage to your body than what you would expect otherwise.

You know what it is like to have a perfume attack.  This is when you are in a room filled with people that are drenched in perfume.  There are so many different types of perfumes out there that it is hard to determine who is wearing what.  Most women love the smell of perfume and wearing too much of it is a very big problem with them. They will coat their entire body in perfume and this will leave innocent bystanders dying from the stench.

A perfume allergy is not limited to the woman that is wearing the perfume.  There are many people that have problems with a certain type of perfume that they put on but there are more and more people out there that are having difficulties with the public that they are surrounded by and all the perfume that they are wearing.  There is perfume in most everything that is on the market today.  There are cleaners, hair spray and even shampoo that have certain perfumes in them that can cause a person to go into a breathing attack or perfume allergic reaction.

There are so many different products on the market today that can help a person with a perfume allergy.  For some people that have asthma, a perfume allergy can send them into a terrible asthma attack and give them terrible side effects.  You cannot control who is wearing perfume and what types they wear. For this reason, there are different ways that a person can protect himself or herself with to stop a perfume allergy.  This may include complaining to a boss, wearing a mask, or taking certain medication.

If you have the symptoms of itching eyes, runny nose, wheezing, or coughing you may be having a perfume attack.  Many people have a perfume allergy but they do not even realize it. They may think that this type of reaction is caused by something else.  Sometimes even a doctor will miss a perfume allergy because they are more accustomed to treating seasonal allergies, pet allergies, and other types of allergic reactions.

If you are having an allergic reaction to a perfume or smell, you should get out of the room or away from the culprit anyway that you could. You should get some fresh air to help clear your head and you will notice that you start to feel better right away. Sometimes this is all you need and in some other circumstances, you will need to have the counteracting or medication to make you feel better.  A doctor usually recommends these.  Having certain perfume allergy can be frustrating but you have to find something that will help you feel better and get through it because there is really nothing that you can do to stop others from wearing the wrong perfumes.

It is hard to spend time with your animal if you are allergic to them.  So many people are finding it painfully hard to be with their pet because they are allergic to them.  Pet allergies can strike anyone at any age in their life.  Usually people that suffer from pet allergies have mild or moderate allergies to pollens or molds.  There is believed to be a strong genetic relation in getting an allergy.  This means that if your parents have allergies, you are more likely to have them as well.

The part of the pet that most people are allergic to be the dander or the dead skin that is always being shed. Sometime a pet owner will be allergic to the saliva or the urine.  Dogs and cats are the most common pets that people have so this will make them at the top of the allergic pet list.  Other people are allergic to birds, hamsters, rabbits, mice and pigs to name a few.  There may also be certain species of animals that people are more allergic to than others.

The symptoms of pet allergies are usual to tell. Most people will realize what is going on. They will suffer from itchy eyes, runny nose, asthma symptoms, skin that is itchy or red and many others.  Some people are not even aware that they have allergies especially children will suffer from some of these symptoms and may have increased cause of colds and other asthma symptoms at the same time.  If the person is separated from the pet for some time like a few weeks or so, the symptoms will go away but happen all over again when the child and the animal come back into contact.

There are some things that a person can do to help control the allergies that a person may have to their pet and they are the following:

* Keep animals out of the bedroom at all times and this will help a person get the rest that they need.

* Have a good HEPA air cleaner in your home.

* Close all the ducts to the bedroom and use electric heaters.

* Clean your vacuum all the time.

* Make sure that you bathe your pet weekly and with a good antibacterial soap.

* Keep the pet out of the car and off the furniture.

* Be sure to wash your hands after you handle your pet.

These are all good tips to keep yourself and others safe from pet allergies. It is going to happen no matter what but with the help of a few of these tips, you can help to keep the allergies under control a little better.
