Hyperpigmentation
Friday, 17 February 2012

Many dermatologists recommend chemical peels as an effective method for dealing with acne. But are they as effective when it comes to treating someone with hyperpigmentation, or dark spots on their skin?

Dark spots are also referred to as age spots or even liver spots. They are part of the aging process and some people are more prone to developing these spots than others. If you happen to live in a hot climate or are of African or Asian decent dark spots may be a problem for you.

Dark spots or hyperpigmentation as it is correctly referred to are caused by excessive exposure to sunlight and UV rays. Be careful if you use a tanning bed!

Hyperpigmentation can also be caused by scratching acne or after suffering from severe acne. The condition can become very annoying for many people.

How a Chemical Peel Works

To remove dark spots and discoloration from your skin your dead skin cells must be removed.  This removal process will allow your hair follicles to breathe again. Plus the excess oil inside will be removed.

Two of the more commonly used chemical peels used are peels containing Alpha-Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids. The Beta Acids can be very harsh on your skin and dermatologists prefer to use Alpha Hydroxy peels as much as possible.

Another great chemical peel is one containing lactic acid. This is a very mild and gentle acid which allows your skin to shed layers effectively, without any harsh side effects.

Sour milk contains lactic acid and could be tried first as a home remedy. Or try and find natural products containing this ingredient.  Other acids that are used for removing dead skin cells are lemon and orange juice. As well as removing the skin layers the acid will help to gently bleach your dark spots.

Chemical peels should be applied to your skin avoiding the eye area and left for between 1 and 10 minutes. The time will depend on how stringent the chemical peel is.  This process may need to be repeated once a week for up to 4 weeks. If you are uncertain as to when to use your peel seek professional help first.

While many chemical peels are suitable for home use, some such as Phenol peels must be performed by a dermatologist. This type of peel can take up to two hours to complete during which time your skin should be closely monitored.

Chemical peels are a wonderful solution for treating hyperpigmentation. Just research the products that you intend to use first and always buy the best quality peel that you can afford.

Is this a question that you are attempting to solve? Maybe you are dealing with skin discoloration and are looking for ways to treat this condition? Some people only suffer with small blemishes. While others have large areas of skin discolorations which look very pronounced.

The color of your skin, hair and eyes is controlled by a substance called melanin. When your body does not control the production of melanin effectively the result is known as a condition called hyperpigmentation.

Melanin production normally becomes less effective as we age and this produces spots or blemishes on your skin. Which are fondly referred to as age or liver spots.

However, exposure to too much sunlight can cause your body's production of melanin to go out of whack at any age! This can be a huge problem for many people.

Large skin spots can look ugly and lower your self confidence. Additionally hyperpigmentation can result for teenagers who have suffered from severe acne. They get one problem cleared up only to have to deal with another! This can be very frustrating indeed.

Some cases of skin discoloration will clear up by itself. It normally takes a few months for this to happen though. The process can be helped by using lightening creams and home remedy solutions.

These solutions will contain some form of acid. Lactic acid and lemon juice are well known for anyone interested in home remedies. Simply apply this acid to the affected area once or twice a day for a period of around 2 weeks. You should start to notice an improvement, but it can take longer depending upon the severity of the skin discoloration.

For more severe cases of skin discoloration it would be wise to seek the advice of a dermatologist. They can recommend the correct course of treatment or even suggest some good over the counter products for you.

More extreme treatments include the use of laser and phenol peels. These need to be done under supervised conditions as sometimes they can result in your skin blistering. This type of treatment should only be considered if your hyperpigmentation is severe.

You must remember that as we age everyone will develop age spots and some form of skin discoloration. Only start treating your condition if it is very pronounced or is causing you problems emotionally. No one wants to be made to feel bad because of their skin condition.

You don't have to live with skin discoloration. Try some of the simple home remedies first before proceeding to more extreme treatments.

Hyperpigmentation is a condition which is often left behind after treating acne. While some other people have a natural tendency towards skin spots and discoloration. No matter what the cause of your hyperpigmentation, it can be an unwanted and unsightly condition.

As with any skin condition finding natural remedies is often the first course of action. One of the most effective home remedies for skin discoloration is to simply use lemon juice.  The acid in the lemon will help to lighten the discoloration.  Lemon juice by itself can cause your skin to dry out. A good solution is to mix a little honey into the lemon juice and then apply this solution onto your skin.

If you own an aloe vera plant then this is another wonderful remedy for hyperpigmentation. As well aloe vera can be used for a number of skin ailments and rashes. It is a particularly useful plant and one that you might wish to start growing!

Avocadoes are high in vitamin E, which are often used in many pricey skin care products. You can simply mash the avocado until it resembles a clear paste. Then spread the paste on the affected area and leave on as a mask for about 20 minutes. Use warm water to rinse the avocado mask off of your face and then gently pat dry.

Another great remedy that might sound a little strange is to use fresh onions to lighten your skin blemishes. For this method you want to mash or grind the onions into a fine mixture. Then add a little vinegar to bind the onions into a paste. Apply this to your skin and leave for 20 minutes. Again pat your skin dry very gently.

If you prefer to use a natural skin cream there are several over the counter remedies that are considered natural. Just take a look at the list of ingredients or ask the pharmacist for their recommendations.  You want to ensure that there are no harsh or abrasive chemicals which could possibly irritate your skin further.

Many dermatologists recommend using a face peel as a treatment for hyperpigmentation. These peels are applied to your face and left on for upwards of twenty minutes before being washed off. Some peels will need to be done on a regular basis to keep your hyperpigmentation under control.

Using natural products for any skin condition is a great idea. Try using a home remedy first and see what results you get before spending money on expensive creams and lotions that may or may not be necessary.

If you are looking for tips on how to remove or lighten dark spots on your skin you have come to the right place! Dark spots can be unsightly and embarrassing but most can be treated with some simple steps.

The easiest and most effective tip I can give you is to use lemon juice on your dark spots. I like to soak a cotton ball with some lemon juice and then gently dab it on the area. If you find it drips down your face a little you can always mix in some honey and change the consistency until it is more of a paste. Then apply this to the area.

Now, I have also heard that using orange juice is just as good. I haven't personally tried this but you might want to give it a go! It is the acid in the lemons and oranges that help to lighten your dark spots. The juice acts as a bleach to change the color of your dark spots. I used to use lemon juice to put sun kissed streaks in my hair when I was younger!

The only thing about using lemon juice is that it might dry your skin out. So be particularly careful if you have sensitive skin. Using a good moisturizer overnight could be very helpful.

Another great tip that I have seen work is to place slices of freshly cut vegetables such as potato, cucumber or tomato on your dark spots. Sit down with these slices on your skin for 10 to 15 minutes at least once if not twice a day.

If the lemon juice or fresh veggie methods don't work for you then you can look for some over the counter solutions. Most of these will contain some form of acid, as this is what will help remove the dead layers of skin from your face and/or hands. In addition the cream will lighten the dark spots and slowly help them fade away.

For extreme cases of dark spots you may want to consider laser treatment. Of course this will be more expensive but if your spots are really dark or stubborn it might be something worth considering.

It is important to remember that no matter what treatment you go with your dark spots could return. If you live in a really warm climate or are just outdoors a lot be considerate of your skin. Use a good sun lotion and reapply it every few hours for maximum benefits.

One of the best tips for keeping your skin clean and healthy and one that helps to reduce the amount of dark spots is to drink lots of water. Water helps to flush out the toxins from your skin and your entire body. By increasing your water intake you are helping your body maintain a healthy lifestyle and look!

The definition of hyperpigmentation is a darkening of the skin or nails caused by excessive amounts of melanin.

One of the major causes of this skin condition is too much sun exposure. Understandably people of Mediterranean, Asian and African descent are likely to suffer from hyperpigmentation. The areas affected are normally the face and the back of the hands.

Other causes of hyperpigmentation include suffering from certain diseases such as celiac disease, adrenal problems, smoker's melanosis and mercury poisoning.

The condition is harmless but can look unsightly. Just as with acne this can leave a person with a lack of self esteem and a lack of confidence. Finding a way to treat this skin condition can have positive results and luckily some treatments are readily available.

Before treating hyperpigmentation it is wise to fully understand what causes this condition. As we mentioned before it is caused by too much melanin. Melanin is a pigment which is responsible for color. Melanin produces the color in your eyes, hair and skin.

As we age the production of melanin in your body becomes less regular, your body loses control over the amounts of melanin being produced.  Exposure to UV light stimulates the production of melanin. Too much UV light and your body produces way too much melanin. This results in the darkening of your skin and unfortunately this is often very patchy in appearance.  These spots are often referred to as age spots and are a normal part of the aging process.

Once you have developed hyperpigmentation you will always need to be careful about exposing your skin to excessive amounts of sunlight.

Less severe cases of hyperpigmentation can be treated with some simple home remedies using items like lemon and orange juice. Professional treatments include some type of acid treatment to help remove the dead layers of your epidermis.

Topical creams such as corticoid steroid creams have been found to be particularly helpful. Skin lightening creams will also help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Some bleaching creams can actually irritate your skin making your condition worse. If your skin is sensitive you may want to be extra careful about using this type of cream. Perform a small test patch first and see what happens to your skin.

Most people will suffer from hyperpigmentation at some time in their life. This is perfectly normal and nothing to be overly concerned about. Many of these skin blemishes will heal by themselves but it can take up to 9 months or one year for this to happen. If your pigmentation is a cause for concern it might be worth looking into ways to treat your skin condition.
