Lacrosse
Wednesday, 13 February 2008

Lacrosse is a very popular sport that is considered to be the oldest sport in America. It is believed Indians invented the game in the 15th Century. While they enjoyed playing the game as a recreational sport, it was also used as a means of settling disputes that arose among tribe members. Many tribes used lacrosse as a way of training the young warriors for battle.

In those days, the game of lacrosse was played with teams of hundreds of men on each side. The game often lasted for several days, taking a break when the sun went down until the next morning. They did not have a distinct playing field or sidelines. Instead, they simply ran all along the countryside.

The game of lacrosse was introduced to America after French missionaries watched the games taking place in the 17th Century. Settlers in Montreal engaged in the game of lacrosse in the 18th Century. During this time it was introduced to residents of Canada. They later brought the game of lacrosse to the United States, England, Ireland, and Scotland.

Lacrosse has been a favorite sport for centuries. It continues to be played today around the world. Lacrosse tournaments in England, the United States, Australia, and Canada draw millions of spectators each year. Many great athletes who went on to succeed on the basketball court and the football field have stated they got their start playing lacrosse. The sport is credited with teaching valuable skills that carry on into over sports arenas.

If you are interested in following the professional sport of lacrosse, the Internet offers a great deal of information regarding lacrosse event that will be taking place. You can even find out about the rules for regulation play. There are a variety of lacrosse magazines that feature the sport as well as the player and the coaches.

While lacrosse was initially a game played by men, women's lacrosse teams have sprouted up in various locations around the globe. While this league doesn't have the numbers of players or spectators as the men's league it continues to grow in numbers. While it does take some time to fully understand the rules of the game, those who have taken the time to do so really seem to love this action packed game that has been around for centuries.

The game of lacrosse is one that is full of exciting adventure as the players' speed around the playing field in an attempt to score points. The game is fast paced and there is a high risk of injury. As a result there are many different types of equipment that are required for playing lacrosse, some essential for play and others necessary to meet safety requirements.

Probably the most important piece of equipment in the game of lacrosse is the stick. After all, this is the main way to get the ball under control and to score points. Lacrosse sticks are made out of plastic and titanium. They are made differently for men and women since the rules of the game vary slightly.

Gloves are commonly worn in lacrosse to help keep a firm grip on the stick. They also help prevent the user from developing rough patches and blisters from continued use of the stick during lacrosse practice sessions and play time. Men are commonly required to wear a helmet during play because of how aggressive the games generally become. The helmet must include protective eyewear or a separate eye covering must be worn. Since the game is less aggressive for women, they are not required to wear the helmet, but eyewear is still necessary.

There are many different types of padding that are required to protect your body while playing lacrosse. This includes shoulder pads, rib pads, arm pads, and elbow guards. There are also special pads that goalies are required to use. For shoes, most of them designed for lacrosse have cleats on the bottom similar to football shoes. For additional safety, men should consider wearing a jock strap and cup during play. Many women find wearing a sports bra helps them especially if they happen to feature large breasts.

The game of lacrosse requires some essential pieces of equipment including the ball and a goalie for each end of the field. Having the right equipment will help you be able to enjoy the game as well as help protect you against injuries. You can get lacrosse equipment at any sporting goods store or on the Internet. In many cases, you can find complete lacrosse outfits that feature everything you need at a great price.

The game of lacrosse is an action packed sport that has been placed for centuries by people all over the world. The game consists of a variety of events taking place that are a combination of football, hockey, and basketball. Many people love to watch and to play the game of lacrosse because it is very fast paced, testing the stamina and endurance of the players throughout the game.

During play, each team has ten players on the field consisting of a goalie; three attack men, three mid fielders, and three defensemen. Each player has a particular area of the playing field to cover. The goalie and three players have to remain on the defensive side of the field while three have to remain on the offensive side of the playing field. The three mid fielders, as their name implies can go back in forth across the middle of the playing field.

The main objective of the game is to place a rubber ball into the net of the opponent using a long stick made out of plastic or titanium. However, the opposing team is trying to do the same with your net so you have to be preventing them from doing so at the same time. Most standard lacrosse games feature four quarters, each being twelve minutes long. There is a two-minute break after each quarter and a ten-minute half time.

The field for playing lacrosse has a goal on each side of it. The players continually participate in strategies for both offensive and defensive movements in their efforts to score points while preventing the other team from gaining any points. Only the goalie for each team is allowed to touch the ball with their hands. After the half point of the game the teams will switch sides.

Lacrosse is a very interesting sport that people from all over the world enjoy watching and playing. The game can seem somewhat complex until you understand the fundamental rules of how the game is played. One of the reasons so many people enjoy lacrosse is because it is a fast paced game full of action and surprises. You never know what you may see taking place out there on the playing field.

One of the most vital accessories in the game of lacrosse are the sticks. Today they are made from plastic and titanium. In the old days, the sticks were carved out of wood. Regulations are very strict in the game of lacrosse regarding the sticks being used. Prior to each game, the umpire checks every stick that will be used in the game.

Since the game of lacrosse is played differently for men and women, the sticks are designed differently as well. The main difference is the pocket isn't as deep for the women's lacrosse sticks.

Many people find it fun and even cost effective to create their own lacrosse stick. It is very easy to purchase the handle only and then design the net. For the best results, string it from the back of the stick. This will help ensure your pocket is designed correctly. To get the mesh to stretch properly use warm water on it. To ensure it dries with the pocket holding its shape, place a wet t-shirt in the pocket balled up. Only use basic sailor knotting procedures to hold them firmly in place.

For those of you who wish to purchase a lacrosse stick that is ready to go, here are some features you want to consider. For a men's lacrosse stick, make sure the head features a very large pocket. For a women's stick, the ball can't be more than half way into the pocket. You don't want to purchase one that is too deep. You can purchase a shaft and head together as one unit. However, some people find they prefer a thicker shaft. In that case, you can get the shaft you want and a head separately. This works great for women because their shaft design is generally slimmer.

Keep in mind that there is no perfect lacrosse stick. Each person will find that they prefer a particular style to another. To make sure you find the one that is right for you, try out many different types. There are sticks designed for beginners as well as those that meet the guidelines for professional lacrosse playing. The more advanced sticks will definitely cost more so keep this in mind while deciding on which type will benefit you the most. They range in price from $25 to $600.

For Centuries lacrosse have been a very popular sport, but one mainly for men to partake in. In the past few decades, women have become recognized as viable participants on the lacrosse field. While this event continues to grow for them, it doesn't get the coverage or prestige that comes with the game of lacrosse for men. There are also far fewer women who play lacrosse and spectators for it than with the male counterpart.

The game of lacrosse is slightly altered for women, mainly to reduce the amount of physical contact that takes place among the players while on the field. They are still required to wear eyewear and a mouth guard though as injuries can and often do happen. Another significant difference for women's lacrosse is that the pockets of the sticks are more shallow than those used by the men. The result of this is that the ball is more difficult to catch and it can't be shot with as much speed.

Women's lacrosse teams also play with two more players on the field then the men's teams allow. The team features a goalie, three attackers, five mid fielders, and three defenders. Seven of the players assume either the position of the attacker or the defender depending on who has control of the ball at any given point in time. The other four players and the goalie aren't' allowed to cross the restraint line or a penalty will be imposed for the team.

Checking is probably the area of the game that differs the most between women and men's lacrosse. Women are only allowed to check if it is in a direction away from the head of the person carrying the ball. This can only be done using the side of the stick. If women use the flat of the head as the men are allowed to do, the umpire will transfer the ball to the opposing team.

Lacrosse continues to be a very interesting sport around the world. Women are now able to play the game professionally, but as you can see the rules have been altered somewhat. Some think this is why women's lacrosse has not gotten the recognition that it deserves. They feel unless the rules are the same, as for the men, then they will never reach the same popularity status. It doesn't appear that these rules will be changing though any time in the near future.
