Painting Professionally
Sunday, 07 February 2010

Everyone who lives in a house would be concerned about house painting at a certain point of time. This is because the paint is one of the most noticeable features of a house and with that; responsible owners have to take care of it. The thing is that, a lot of owners don't actually know how to deal with issues regarding house paint.

If you fall in that category, you don't really have to worry much. But since it is so, here is a quick house painting guide that will give you some important details that you have to learn about house painting.

Two Approaches

When you want your house painted, you can either hire someone to do it for you or you can do it yourself. Both approaches will ultimately get your house painted but if you want the best quality of work as much as possible, it is advised that you hire someone to do it for you. Be aware that if you hire someone to do the job for you, this can cost you up to four times as much as if you do it yourself.

If you have the luxury of time and are willing to give the effort, you can do it yourself. This job however is quite hard; this would take a lot of your time and would leave you always tired at the end of the day. The good thing about this is you can save a lot of money, since you won't have to pay for expensive labor charges of which house painters would charge you for.

Choosing Colors

Yes it is your house and with that, some people would think that they could put whatever color they could in whatever part of the house they want it to be. However, if you do this you might even get disappointed. Choosing colors is one of the toughest parts of house painting, since you have a whole lot to choose from.

In choosing colors, you can either mix and match colors or go with colors that follow a certain scheme. If you are doubtful about this, better yet hire the help of an expert. Only start painting if and only if you are already sure of the colors that you choose. You don't want to paint now and start all over again later if you get disappointed with the results.

Small Details

Yes we know that we have to paint the walls, closets and ceilings but what we don't pay much attention to is the small details, which are also supposed to have the right colors. These small details include the doorframes, moldings and window frames and if they have the right color, they can boost the overall beauty of your house.

In choosing colors for small details, they would have to compliment whatever other colors there are in the room of which they will be placed. It would look odd if the colors do not go together.

Small details may really look small but in reality, they are really important. The impact they have on the house is way more that how people think about it so it is very important that you make it look good just as much as the larger details.

When it comes to house painting, the labor itself isn't actually the most difficult step. The most difficult step comes when you have to choose the right colors. Whether you want to mix and match different colors or would want to follow a coloring scheme, it would be easier if  there was a way for you to picture out how your house would look like if you can see it with the colors you want. Fortunately, there is house painting software that allows you to actually see your house with colors that you want it to have.

If you are a professional house painter, an interior designer or just someone who just wants to know what the right colors you need in your house, there is this house painting software you could use. This does not only allow you to imagine what your house would look like if it had different colors but actually allows you to see it.

How Does This Software Work?

If we want our house painted, we would first think of different colors and how to put them together. With this, it would be much easier if there was a way for you to see how the house would look like if you painted it all over with the colors that you need. That need is specifically answered by house painting software, so much that a lot of experts actually use these themselves.

Just take a picture of the part of your house of which you want to get painted with whatever colors you wish, upload this in the software and using what you can in the software you can actually not only picture out but see how that part of the house would look like in different colors. What is even nicer is you can assign colors to whichever part of the house you want it to, allowing you to see what part of the house looks nice with different colors.

What Are Other Benefits I Can Get From This?

While the main purpose of it allowing you to see how the house would look like in different colors would already help you a lot, this software can actually help you do more than just that. This software has a built in calculator that would evaluate how much you would spend if you were to paint your house in the way you are picturing it out. With this software, you are actually able to calculate paints costs and other material costs very accurately and quickly.

If you have difficulty deciding which colors go where, you can have that come to you quickly by having custom color schemes. This would give you a lot of pleasant options to choose from and more than that, this can give you a lot of creative ideas that you can really use. With the many wonders of house painting software, you should have a better time painting your house.

How Do I Use This?

While this software is actually already very helpful, it would still help if you know a lot more. Considering that, you should increase your knowledge by reading books related to painting.

There are many things that make it really difficult for people to paint their own houses; one of those is that a lot of them just can't decide what color would be right for the house. Some of you might ask if you should stick to one color in all walls of the house or if you should mix and match whatever you could in your house. With this, this is a venue for you of for who you are hiring to be creative, this is when you can make use of some house painting ideas.

Since there is so much to choose from, it would be quite difficult for you to end up with ideas on how you could creatively paint your house. Considering that, here are some tips and details you might consider taking a look at when painting your house.

Think Of a Theme

One approach that you could take when painting your house is to think of a theme, which is if you like it, you can have all walls and colors in your house jive together. With this, it does not necessarily mean that your house should just have one color in all angles, you can have different colors but have them share a certain shade such as earth colors, neon colors or plain colors. Whatever it is that you choose, make sure you are comfortable with it.

Some people actually take this too extreme. There was once a person who was a Star Trek addict that decked his whole house of Star Trek stuff. The inside of his house would look like a Star Trek museum or one of those spaceships you see on the show. It is not necessary that you go to that standard; having a simple hint of a theme is good enough if you prefer it.

Mix and Match

When it comes to painting your house, there are actually no rules involved. So if you are that type of person who would like to see different things all in one angle, you can mix and match different colors in your house. Not only do these look good, it actually adds more excitement to your house. Having a healthy mix of colors around you can make you feel better while you are in it.

However, you have to be careful when doing this. Having too many colors that are either too bright or too dark could be stressful, and could look ugly too. When doing this, it is advised that you seek the help of an expert. If you insist doing this yourself, be careful in choosing the colors.

Artwork on the Walls

If you really want it, you can actually have creative designs on your wall. If you are the artsy type, you can do this yourself but if you are not, you can still have this. Some professional painters and interior designers would actually offer this service. Just be careful not to overdo this.

It is recommended that you have the patterns or whatever it is that you choose only to be at some parts of the house and not everywhere. This house painting idea is best suited with the mix and match idea. Also be careful not to have too much of this, try to pick patterns that are simple.

Whichever approach you would take; just make sure that you are comfortable with it.

House painting would require a lot of your time, effort and a few bucks but most of all, what it really requires is already in the name itself, that of which is paint. When it comes to house painting, paint is really a big issue; this is because you have so many options that make it already quite difficult for you to know what you really need.

With how business is, we can't really blame them. Everyone who sells a product would always look for that competitive edge even when it comes to paint. So when you are painting your house, you should know what different types of paints to choose from and how they would really work for each area of your house.

Dealing with Other Things First

While you would of course have to paint your house first, a very important thing you should do, so important that you should never skip this is to look for holes or cracks on your wall. You should first fix this by adding putty which would come in fiberglass or plaster to the area and only adding the paint once it is dry. This is because when having a new layer of paint, you want your house to look as new as possible. Having unfixed holes and cracks does not meet this purpose.

If the area of which you are about to repaint is made of wood and it needs some repairing, it is best that you replace the whole area. Get a contractor to repair that area for you. Wood is very sensitive compared to other materials, if one would get termites the other parts of your house which are made of wood could also be affected later, thus you should fix this immediately.

Choosing the Type of Paint - Durable Paints

You should choose the type of paint according to what would suit best to the area of which you would apply it to and where the paint would look good on that area.

For a natural grained look or for woodwork, varnish is best used. The glossy and hard appearance of varnish would not only make parts that are made up of wood look better but it can actually protect those parts from moisture.

For areas that people use the most in the house such as the kitchen and the bathroom, you would need a tough type that is alkyd. This is recommended for such areas because of its durability and because it is easy to wash.

One of the most commonly used types of paint is acrylic. Because of its toughness and the variety of glosses available, this would be used for some as an all around paint.

Other Types of Paint

While the paints mentioned above would be ideal to those areas, the ones that will be used on most parts of the house would not be any of those above.

Latex is a water based paint of which you can use straight out of the can. The only thing here is it is not as durable as the other option, although it is generally cheaper.

The more recommended type of paint you can use is the oil-based ones. Although they are generally more expensive, you could end up actually saving more since they last longer. There are also a whole lot of glosses to choose from when it comes to this type.

Painters have usually advertised their services by posting ads on the back of their trucks or plainly by word of mouth. Considering that painting jobs are quite hot now, there are more approaches of how you could get more customers. If you have not thought of it, the internet is one great way of you getting more customers.

If you are old-fashioned, you probably haven't thought of this approach yet. If that is so, you are indeed losing a lot of potential customers. So if you are considering using the internet for having more customers, here are some seemingly helpful tips you might consider if you want to harvest customers online.

Why Use The Internet?

Nowadays, the internet is all around us. Every business, organization or even nonsense would be on the internet. Aside from that, think of how much people use the internet. Without a doubt, the internet has become a large part of our society. Considering how much people are involved with it, if you have a good share out of all the people, it will definitely help you a lot if you had a way of having people who are into the internet find out about your painting job.

When people look for things, where do they usually go? If you think that they would first go to the yellow page, that is right but nowadays, a lot of them would rather go to the internet and look for something they need. Thus if your services are very much visible in the internet, then this increases your potential of hiring more customers.

What to Do

If you have been into the internet for quite some time already, you probably know how internet advertising works already. Considering that, there are numerous ways on how you could advertise online. However, not all those methods are actually effective.

A good way of advertising online is to have an account in a reputable network that would showcase what you really have. This is so effective that a lot of popular companies and businesses actually do this. The network of which the website is involved will expose you to more potential customers.

If you have the budget for it, you can take advertising to the next level, which is you can build your own website. Having your own website may not always be the best way of advertising your services but it really would do a lot for you. For some, they also consider it as the crowing glory of their business. This is because it is commonly thought that only good companies have websites.

How to Manage

The internet is very important in advertising, so much that some companies actually dedicate a lot of their time and effort just to build a presence on the internet. If you want to attract customers online, this is what you are basically trying to do. So in doing this, make sure that whatever you are putting in, customers would see and get attracted to it.

To be effective in your painting job, you must first have all the customers you can get and this is made more possible if you know how to find customers online. Aside from you should know what approaches to take in order for you to get more customers; you should also learn how to manage your situation.

House painting is not a very difficult task however, if it is your first time or if you still find it difficult, you can use some of these tips. The reason why a lot of people would find house painting hard is because it is a skill and thus, it would require experience. With that, the things that you will learn from experience are provided for you in this article.

When painting you house, you have to take note that different approaches and materials would be needed for different parts of the house. Different types of paint are to be used on cement, wooden walls and those parts that are most commonly exposed to moisture such as the kitchen or the bathroom. To let you know what those are, here are some of them.

Painting Wood

Wood is one of the parts of the house of which you would have to maintain often, since it is the one that is the least strong and the one that wears out easily. With this, you would have to paint it with something that would preserve its durability. When doing this, some people would start of by applying a protective layer of protective material such as primer before applying another layer of paint.

What is important here is that the wood that you will paint must be in good condition, double check for termite holes and cracks. If the wood is quite old, then you would need to have that part of the house replaced. Having wood of poor quality defeats the purpose of repainting it, this is to restore that part of the house to its former glory.

Painting Cement

Most of the parts of your house, especially the walls are most likely made of cement. With that, you will have to take a few steps in repainting your wall. First of all, you must clean it. That is, clean the whole and make sure that the area that you will paint will be free of dust or any visible amounts of dirt. After that, check for cracks and holes that are in the wall. If you spot any, fill them with your preferred filler. Fillers usually come in fiberglass or plaster.

Wait for the filler to dry then after that, smooth the edges with sandpaper. Take note of other irregularities on the wall and make sure to also smooth them out. After this is done, you are now ready to apply the paint. Some people would still apply a layer of protective material and you can also do so if you prefer it.

Other Details

After you have painted the ceilings and the walls, you are now ready to paint the door and window frames, cabinets and doors. The first approach is quite similar to how you would paint other parts of the house. You must first check for any irregularities such as holes and cracks. For doors and cabinets, check the hinges and make sure that these objects are fully functional before you apply paint. You would not want to have something that you cannot use later painted.

If the small cabinets would later start cracking or having holes in it, you can cover that area with your preferred filler, smooth it and use spray paint of the same color of the whole cabinet to repaint the damaged area. There is no need to have the whole area painted.

With these house painting tips, painting your house should be much easier.

While paint of course is necessary to have your house painted all over, you would have to use a lot of different equipment so that you would paint your house faster and much better. That would make some of you think, what equipment do we need? Or isn't a brush and some paint already enough? Unless you are contented with your house looking like a 5-year old's crayon sketch then maybe that is all you need.

Painting your house is like producing artwork with the house itself as the canvas and with that, you have to put in a lot to make it look like a masterpiece. In order to get you there, you need much more than just a brush and paint. Here is some house painting equipment you can really use.

Painting Materials

The most basic medium of applying paint to the house is by the means of a brush. While there are numerous options nowadays that would tend to make the brush obsolete since these new options are way faster and more effective, some still prefer the using the brush because it is the best way of painting some parts especially those of which you would have to pay close attention to or some small details such as window and door frames.

Aside from the brush, you can use a roller. The roller is much faster and is really effective in spreading paint evenly on where you apply it. If you have the budget, you can go one step further, which is to make use of an airbrush. This is the fastest and most effective way of painting however; it is also the most expensive method.

Cleaning Equipment

After you have painted your house, it is now time to clean things up. That means that you would of course have to clean a lot of things after you have painted your house. Fortunately, this is very easy to do nowadays with the presence of a lot of new cleaning materials and fluids that are most likely available in housing supplies near you.

If paint goes to some parts of which you don't want it to be, you can remove that using paint thinner. Thinner can also be used to remove paint from the tips of your brushes, this of which you should do right after you are finished painting. If paint gets on to your skin, you can easily remove it with some lotions that are also designed specifically for that purpose.

If you use latex paint, water is already enough to remove stains since latex is water based. Only use other fluids if you are using other types of paint.

Other Equipment Needed

When painting, you would of course have to get to some parts that you could not reach naturally. For you to be able to do so, you can do this through a ladder. Ladders now are more than what they used to be, some would fold to form different forms thus allowing you to move much freely than how the traditional ladder would.

For some, they would want to know if they applied just the right amount of paint. They can measure this through an electronic device which would let them know if they did meet what they wanted to. Although this house painting equipment is not really necessary, it is a big advantage especially if you are a commercial house painter.

For some of you, especially for those who have new houses; you would most likely go for neon or bright colors which are quite of a trend now. This is also observed by a lot of new interior designers, architects and professional house painters but for some of us, we would still prefer that classic look that of which would be made possible if your house had colonial house colors.

This is best when you live in a historic neighborhood or just when you think that the look would make you feel comfortable in your hose. So if you want that classic and sought after look, here are a few things you must know about colonial house colors.

What Are Colonial House Colors?

Colonial house colors are influenced by how old-time Spanish people would color their houses. This style is very minimal and the most visible colors here are white for the walls, stone colors for the flooring and simple colors for the roofs. For some people, they find this dull but for a few, this classic look is still very much appealing. This look gives a more relaxed aura to the area around.

People prefer this color scheme because it is very simple yet elegant in fact, a lot of manors would share this scheme. Because of its appeal, the trend of having this quite old color scheme is regaining popularity even in modern housing.

This is very common among European suburbs and for some historic villages. These colors are not only limited to historic housing but some reputable architects have made it so that modern houses can share the look but with a modern twist. If some creativity is applied, then there is definitely a lot you can do with these rather simple colors.

When Should I Have Them?

Whether you are building your new house or if you want to give your house a new look, you can have them. However, you should be careful not to just give your house a new look. If your house exhibits colonial architecture, then that would be best for these types of colors but if you want to be creative and give a modern house a colonial look, it would be best if you sought the help of an expert. A lot of them are good enough to know how to blend classic colors into modern architecture.

Just make sure that you really want these colors. Be aware that these colors are some of the simplest color schemes possible and are not fancy in any way. If you know where to put which colors, you are sure to be delighted with what you can produce.

More Details

Colonial housing is not limited to the colors mentioned earlier. Colonial house colors are practically any colors that would give your house that classic look. You can have plain white or for some popular cases, they have their walls in bricks or even stones. Up to some extent, some cases even have the chimneys made up of the same materials that are used to build the walls.

Another popular detail people like about colonial colors are the colors that small details have, since they aren't really that small when it comes to colonial architecture. The doors and windows would at times, stand out because of their rather thick appearances. For some, this would even be the highlight of the house.

Every house whether being constructed or not would need a new layer of paint, inside and outside every once in a while. With this, there are many approaches you can take, the best of those options being that you hire a good contractor to do the job for you.

When having a house painted, it is best that you have someone that would do the job just right for you. With that, you must be able to find a good and reliable house painting contractor. While that may seem too easy, it actually is not. All contractors are able to do their jobs but each and every one of them would have their certain groove that is they all work differently according to their working styles. You must know this and consider this heavily when you are hiring a contractor.

The working style is just one of the many things you should pay attention to. For your to be further educated with details when hiring a contractor, here are some helpful facts and details that you can use.

How Much Does It Actually Cost?

First of all, you must take note that hiring a contractor for painting services would never come cheap. Painting is a lot of work and people who offer it just justify that labor intensity, they make up for it by charging a lot, so much that in fact, the cost of paint which is already considerably high would only make up for around 15% to 25% of the total amount that most companies would charge you, which leaves 75% to 85% of the total amount as the amount that you actually pay for services.

Considering all that, you are indeed paying a lot. Because it is so, the money that you pay must also be justified by their services. In doing this, make sure you pick the one that is known for doing a great job and make sure you like how the contractor works. You would of course want the results to be worth your money.

Why Should I Hire Someone?

If you want your house painted and think that it actually costs a lot, you probably have thought that maybe you can do it yourself. While this may seem like a healthy and economic option, this is not the best option. Doing it yourself will not only take a lot of time, effort and brains but it might not also produce desirable results.

Since contractors are made for that specific purpose, which is to paint houses effectively, then they are proven to do their jobs effectively. Not only that, they actually do the job quicker and produce much better results. If you happen to have a good contractor, then it is guaranteed that you will be delighted with the results that you will get.

What Should I Be Expecting?

First of all, you must be financially ready. Just think about this; a gallon of paint which would cost you around $25 for a one that has good quality is enough to cover around 400 square feet. Depending on how big your house is, that is roughly the amount of paint that you need. Take into consideration that that amount would only be around 15% to 25% as mentioned earlier and that is how much you should be expecting.

Aside from that, there is practically nothing to worry about except that you and your house painting contractor should have a healthy working relationship. If things turn out right,  you are sure to be delighted with what can be produced.

While everyone would need house painting, there have been a few recent issues regarding it. One of the largest issues would probably be the use of lead paint and its effects on people. While paint has commonly thought to be harmless for a lot of people, the lead contained in it is the total opposite and sadly, it has been proven many times to be harmless.

Lead has become an issue not because it is an ingredient of paint. Lead has also been used in other materials such as toys and school supplies and with the same issues; lead has been known to poison a lot of people.

Although it can be a threat, you can avoid it easily. Lead can be everywhere but avoiding it is quite easy to manage.

What Is Lead Poisoning?

In the interior of buildings that are much older as well as in other details such as the doors, ceilings, cabinets and doors, lead has been used until it was banned in 1978 since it has been proven to cause several sicknesses in children and also in adults. Dealing with this problem can be very costly that some owners who do not care much would not deal with the problem at all, thus causing a threat to all the people who would be exposed to the surfaces that are painted with lead paint.

According to a study, exposure of people to lead paint can cause several mental and physical disorders than can prove destructive as it develops. For pregnant women, exposure to lead can cause abnormal development of the fetus. Lead poisoning can cause a lot ranging from kidney problems in children or in adults to an increase in blood pressure.

What Can You Do?

In most cases, people would try to remove the cause by scraping off the harmful layer of paint and applying a new layer. While this would be the easiest way, you should never try to do this. Scraping off the layer off could cause particles to go flying onto the air and those particles can poison anyone who would inhale it. Instead, try to cover the harmful layer with something like a wallboard or wallpaper and paint that layer.

For doors, cabinets and other small parts, it would be best to have them replaced entirely. You would not want to risk anything regarding health and for this, the safest way is to have the entire thing removed. While that may sound very costly, it pays to be sure of everyone's welfare.

If You Don't Want To Do It Yourself

With the threats imposed by these issues, you might not want to risk your own welfare and thus, have someone else to do the job for you. Fortunately, some people specialize in this. You can hire contractors that are certified to deal with issues regarding lead poisoning. These people already know what to do and can give you advice on how to maintain it and with that, you can already fix the issues without doing things yourself.

With the experience and capabilities of these people, hiring them could be the best option for you. While it may cost you something, you and other people who could be harmed are much safer if you have them do the job for you and with that, your health and everyone else's health are worth much more than the extra cash you would have to pay if you have an expert to do it for you.

Lead paint in house painting may have cause a lot of issues but with ways to control them, there should not be too much.
