Public Speaking
Sunday, 31 October 2010

As clearly proved by Developmental Psychology, childhood is one of the most important stages. In childhood, the foundation of a person is established. It is necessary for parents to really guide their child in this early stage of their life. Most of the values parents would instill to their child in this stage would be absorbed well and be carried through the older years.

There are a lot of things that could be considered educational and must be taught to your child. You as parents could choose from loads of things to let your child learn. There is one thing that would really be a great learning for your child that is public speaking.

What are the essential effects of public speaking? Public speaking is something that when mastered would definitely be an advantage.

At a young age, it would be very good if you encourage your child to speak in front of others. See to it that you allow your child to reach out and speak out his or her mind regarding things. It would be an advantage that your child could speak with those older than him/her.

What could be easy means of polishing your child's public speaking potentials?

At home, you could initiate the ways on how your child could learn the basics of public speaking. By a simple storytelling, you could be able to squeeze out the objectives learning public speaking and let your child absorb it.

You could also try something which involves a simple researching. As we all know, when you speak in front of people, you just do not need to hold on to your personal opinions, it would be a plus if you have references. You could share this important knowledge to your child by preparing simple yet effective steps.

Ask your child to talk to you about pets. Tell her to use your internet and if he or she has the knowledge on computers, it could be the best medium of research. Without it, you could ask him/her to use books or other references available at home.

When you think there is a need for your child to have formal lessons or training, you could enroll her/him in a speech class that could harness the potentials for public speaking.

Eloquence is a great gift. You have this innate gift; you would surely move lives and turn out to be an influential person. The power of speech has been very strong and even our history could unfold the truth behind that. The world has been impressed by many great public speakers; well we do not have to be them just to be good public speakers ourselves.

The following tips may help you ease that hostility from your audience:

  • Be attentive and understand the question being raised.

You noticed that a person from the crowd is just asking you questions just for the sake of asking questions, do not respond with sarcastic tongue. No matter how challenging the question is, keep your cool and answer accordingly.

  • Be guided by your speech

No matter how this hostile audience bombards you with challenging questions, when you go back to the essence and the contents of your speech, this would simply show that you know what you are talking about and not merely stand there and open your mouth.

  • Be the master of your temper

Treat your audience as your friends. With this treatment, they would feel the sincerity. This would further lead to establishing that chemistry between you and the audience. No matter how a part of the crowd pushes you to be irritated, hold that feeling and bear in mind that you are there to talk not to argue with an audience.

  • Be honest to goodness

The more honest you are, the more the audience would really listen to you. It is far easier to deliver a sincere speech than to play pretense. Eventually, the audience will know that you are lying if you continue doing so.

  • Be careful with your gestures

Never use the kind of gesture that may signal the audience that you demand dominion over them and that you are around to preach. Safe gestures are wise options. Be expressive but not too powerful.

There are a lot of things to consider when you are speaking in front of a crowd. From the preparation of your speech to the delivery, there are reminders to remind yourself of. When it comes to that challenge of talking to a hostile crowd, would you dare speak on? You have to.

Public speaking is a great catalyst of influence. For you to be influential as a speaker, you have to set your targets in your mind and be sure to hit them as you deliver your speech. There are weapons you could use in order to achieve your aims. And, they are as follows:

  • The power of  eye contact

Sincerity is a great element in public speaking. No other part of the body could show it best but the eyes of course. As you speak in front of people, it helps to look at them. This is a way of establishing rapport to your audience and showing to them that you are honest with what you are sharing to them.

  • The power of visual aids

Not all people are willing to listen that long, in order for you to retain their attention, it would be great to have visual aids like charts or others. Besides beating the boredom, visual aids could also help your audience understand more your speech or your topic being discussed.

  • The power of handouts

For your audience to remember what you have talked about, it would be a great move to give away handouts so that they could review what you have discussed and they could clearly understand the key points in your speech.

  • The power of confidence

No matter how detailed your prepared speech is but you do not have the guts to deliver it in front of an audience, it would only be a mere speech. When confidence is there, it would definitely boost a person's heart though. When you have the confidence, you have belief in what you do and it would be sensed by your audience.

  • The power of  references

As you present your speech, it would be very effective if you cite names of dependable people and of course references like reading materials. These would strengthen the quality of your speech whatever your purpose is.

These are some of the stepping stone for you as a public speaker.

If you think you do not have it, it is never too late. There are things you could do so that you would be able to gradually have the courage to speak in front of an audience.

  • Speak with people.

Public speaking could be garnered not only by talking with a huge crowd; it could be enhanced through simple acts like going out, talking to new people. Simple as it may seem, you could let yourself do this and enhance public speaking skills.

  • Remind yourself that you are the speaker and, you are the best.

Being positive would lead you to the room of great delivery of your speech. As you face the audience, tame the butterflies in your stomach. Remember that you are the one who would speak to them and that you are a reliable person.

  • Dress and speak

See to it that you dress up appropriately and comfortably. When you feel good on how you look, you would be confident to face people and talk.

  • Be punctual

Arrive early, as much as possible go to the venue earlier than the audience. As you arrive there, look around and feel the audience as if they are around. This move would help you feel relaxed.

There may be moments when you would feel that your throat dries up, take a sip of water. When you feel like running out of breath due to nervousness, breath deeply. When you feel like gathering your thoughts, pause and think. But of course do these discreetly.

  • Move and move your audience

To express more and appeal to the senses of your audience, gestures are the solutions. But, you have to know when is best to apply them.

In writing an essay, a punch in the introductory part would pull the interest of the reader. This is true with public speaking as well. When you open your speech with a bang, you get the attention of the audience. This is a very important stage of our speech. As you deliver what you have prepared, you need to have the attention of our audience.

How would you do that? Well, there are numerous tips available, some are tested and proven while there are tips that are not yet common but may work as well for you. We would be willing to share to you tips that could open your mind in welcoming ideas that would help you speak with our audience in a manner that you could leave the impression you want to.

·          Action speaks louder than words.

Instead of speaking all through out your speech, you could start your speech with a catchy gesture but in connection with the speech you are about to deliver. We know what the power of gestures is. For example, when you are to talk about Anti-abortion laws, you could start with a strong pound on the podium or a hand gesture showing rejection. This would also prepare the audience mind on what you are going to talk about.

·          Laughter is the pill

Boredom in the part of the audience is the biggest enemy of a public speaker. To insert humor would be a big help in keeping your audience to be with you until you end our speech and definitely receive applauses. Humor is an asset. Whatever form of talk or conversation you have, with whatever number of person/s, cracking jokes or playing with your witty thoughts would be great openers.

·          Quotable quotes

There is this touch of wisdom clipped with quotations. When you use a line from someone of credibility, you would be starting your speech with that approval of truth and validity. Quotes would signify a speaker's depth and preparation. There is that impression when you quote people of fame or a person who has relevance with your topic that you are a well-researched resource speaker.

·          Another Cinderella story

Stories are a hit for people of all ages. When you could attach the strings of a story to your speech, you would be able to have an audience until you conclude your speech. Tell stories to our audience, they would be interested to listen more if you start your speech with a story.

Keep these reminders as your guide as you grow with your speech power.

Hitler is said to be one of the most influential leaders throughout history, whether or not he is referred to as a dictator. There is something in him that makes people pay so much interest and his story has indeed influenced the world. What is the connection between being a good speaker and being enable to establish the command for leadership? Well, not all people are gifted with the eloquence and leadership altogether. But, there is that truth which connects the doors of being able to speak your mind in the best possible language and the way you could lead subordinates.

Good speakers are able to build that image of dependability. How could you gather people to obey you when they do not even care to listen to what you say?

When you have the command of speech, you have the ability to mold the beliefs and perceptions of others. With this, you could guide them to do what they could in accordance to what you think is correct and you shared those thoughts in the form of advice. As someone they look up to, it would be easier for you to let them follow what you believe in.

Another advantage is that when you are able to express yourself in the form of public speaking, the more you could build the muscles of our self-confidence. Confidence to one's abilities is very important in order for you to be a real leader.

As a merchant of opinion, you have to be articulate as a speaker. His is also a quality that a good leader must possess. When you have these, you would definitely be a person for people.

As a public speaker, you are exposed to many different people. You have to pulsate on what their types of demands are, meet these as much as you could. This could help you strengthen your leadership. As you get exposed with many different people, you would be sensitive in their needs and wants.

Leaders are born or made? Must a leader be a good speaker? Well, there are no assurances but there are advantages.

There are natural-born good speakers. Do you need to be born with the gift of eloquence in order not to be lousy in public speaking? No. Well, it is of course an advantage but you should not dwell with the thought that you would not have the chance to be a good public speaker.

There are trainings for public speaking that could help you a lot in improving your public speaking potentials. When you are eager to learn and determined to push your self to the rooms on top when it comes to speaking in front of an audience, why not get yourself trained?

There are steps you could take in order for you to get trained. The following are just some you could try:

  • Meet a coach and seek help

There are people who got really formal education and writing for public speaking, you could seek help from someone you really think would be a person of credibility and experience. With a good coach of your choice, you would be learning lots of new things- which is really good.

  • Optimism this time

It pays to identify your mistakes or flaws but with training for public speaking, you have to condition yourself to a certain level of optimism. This means that when you are on the process of improving more, you need not worry about the errors you make. You have to remind yourself as well that you are doing better each day.

  • No rules, no deviants

Treat public speaking as a free room for learning and when you are under the phase of training, do not be too harsh on your self. You could be very open with what is up for you. When you are going to be strict on your self, it would just put so much pressure and would not be helpful.

  • Stop piracy

In training for public speaking, you do not need to mold yourself into someone you look up to in that arena. You must be yourself. You could be the best with your own means and potentials. Remind yourself that you are going to be better.
